Bucket list item no.1 See a $6 movie at Cinema Nova
I’ve come to find that it’s pretty rare to get much change from a $10 note in Melbourne, so you can imagine my delight upon finding out about $6 movie day at Cinema Nova in Carlton. Just think about that for a second…$6!!!
Without reading the book, or the hype surrounding the film, I chose to go see Gone Girl, the new Ben Affleck thriller, directed by David Fincher, adapted from the 2012 Gillian Flynn novel of the same name.
Now let me offer some gentle advice… If you only see one more film during the remainder of 2014, make it this one!! I’m not a self confessed movie buff or a film studies student or anything like that, but one thing I do know is that myself and about 90% of the people in the theatre were quite literally on the edge of our seats for most of the film!
Not for the faint hearted, Gone Girl presents an array of characters who are all fundamentally flawed, as well as a refreshing glimpse into the way that our society is so easily manipulated and progressively brainwashed by the media.
As I said, I haven’t actually read the book, and I’m sure that a lot of those who have will argue that the film doesn’t do the original any justice (as they always do!) That said, in my opinion, the film stands as a complete success in its own right. The casting and acting were great, the pace was just right, and aesthetically, the camera work and set made for a visually striking watch.
Just a heads up, Gone Girl is probably not the kind of film you would want to see on a first date, nor is it a feel-good flick that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside.
The Nova itself is a warm and inviting little cinema, specialising in arthouse films as well as more commercial releases. If you’re in Melbourne but are a little strapped for cash I would recommend heading to the Nova on a Monday for an inspiring but affordable watch! Going to a matinee screening at the beginning of the week, by yourself, is actually a lot more fun than you might expect… and for $6, it’s a bit of a no brainer really!
Please let me know what you thought of Gone Girl, or any other film that you’ve seen recently that you would wholeheartedly recommend or avoid.
